2007 Shiraz

The 2007 Shiraz shows the quality that goes with the increasing maturity of the vines. It was once again made by Mike Garland, now working at the Castelli groups contract crushing facility at Mount Shadforth. It was matured for sixteen months in French and American oak and displays intense pepper and rich plum aromas. It’s a full-bodied style with plenty of fruit on the mid-palate that continues with good texture and length.

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

The second vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon produced by Hawker Ridge, following our first experiment with this variety in 2004. Once again the grapes were sourced locally, from a neighbouring vineyard in Kendenup and the wine was made by Mike Garland, spending fifteen months in predominantly French oak. It displays the classic cold climate Cabernet fruit characteristics of cassis and blackcurrant, with well-structured tannins to give length and balance.

2006 Shiraz

Our third vintage of shiraz is a worthy successor to the elegant 2004 and the big 2005. It shares the spicy cloves and earth aroma of both and the plummy fruitiness of the latter. Once again made by Mike Garland.

In 2010 this wine was awarded a silver medal at the Sydney Royal Wine Show. In their comments the judges noted that many of the wines “were developed and tired, but the award winning wines were great wines and show the diversity of styles coming from different regions”.

In 2007 this wine was awarded a bronze medal at the Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia.

2006 Riesling

A fresh dry wine showing lemon-lime and floral rose petal characters. It has good palate weight, balanced acidity, and a clean finish. This wine was made by Mike Garland, renowned in the Mt Barker region for outstanding red and white wines.

Described by Sunday Times wine write Peter Forrestal as “delightfully floral … fresh and vibrant with intense lemon-citrus flavours and crisp, dry acidity”, the 2006 Hawker Ridge Riesling won a bronze medal in class 20 at the 2008 Macquarie Bank Sydney Royal Wine Show.

2005 Shiraz

This is a full-bodied Shiraz showing ripe fruit with a soft tannin finish. A challenging end to the growing season with late rains has produced an outstanding Shiraz with intense flavours and a remarkable alcohol content. The wine was matured in French and American oak for sixteen months.

2005 Chardonnay

A full-bodied unwooded Chardonnay with peach and rockmelon flavours to excite the palate. This wine was made by Mike Garland from fruit sourced in the Mt Barker region. It exhibits qualities for which the region is renowned.

2005 Riesling

For the 2005 vintage we experimented with a more German-style Riesling, showing fruit sweetness and a crisp finish. It retains the intense lime and citrus aromatic qualities typical of the Hawker Ridge fruit.

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon

Blackcurrent and chocolate are in abundance in this fruit-driven Cabernet, matured in French oak more than a year. This wine has layered tannins and a smooth palate. The fruit was sourced from vineyards in the Kendenup and Mt Barker regions.

2004 Shiraz

Our first Shiraz vintage showed well-balanced tannins, peppery spice and fruit flavours: an elegant example of cool-climate Shiraz. This wine was made by Mike Garland and matured in French and American oak for fifteen months.

2004 Riesling

A fresh stylish Riesling with aromatic qualities grown on a southerly slope of well-drained gravelly loam. This wine was made by winemaker Mike Garland and features all the qualities of a typical cool-climate Riesling for which Mt Barker is renowned.
